1010music’s Blackbox 2, announced back in May, is now actually shipping — availability confirmed this week at $649 / €759 through retailers including Perfect Circuit, roughly on schedule with the “July 2026” target the original announcement set.
Twice the power, in the same compact footprint
The core spec that matters most: twice the processing power of the original Blackbox, still packed into a genuinely portable form factor. That headroom feeds directly into the unit’s 16 independent tracks, each running its own sampler engine capable of hosting a loop, one-shot, slicer, or multi-instrument — plus a new instrument type called Shredder, which combines granular synthesis with slicing to produce a more splintered, chopped-up motion than either technique alone typically achieves.
What actually changed from the original
Beyond raw processing power, the update sheet reads like a direct response to the original Blackbox’s most common complaints: a new 4-inch color touchscreen replaces the earlier unit’s smaller, dimmer display; an internal 3-hour rechargeable battery via USB-C makes the unit genuinely portable rather than tethered to a power supply; and dual USB-C ports (host and device) now support multichannel audio and MIDI over a single cable. Sample streaming from microSD is also more efficient, letting longer WAV files and more detailed multisampled instruments play without the storage bottlenecks that constrained the original.
The sequencer keeps 1010music’s flexible approach — Step, Grid/piano roll, and Probability-based sequencing all available per track — and adds DJ-style XY effects control across filter, delay, EQ, gate, and repeater, alongside internal resampling that lets a track bounce its own output back in as a new source without any external gear.
Why “finally shipping” is itself the news
Hardware announced in spring and shipping mid-summer is a routine cadence, not usually newsworthy on its own — but for a device this widely anticipated within the compact-sampler category (the original Blackbox has a genuine cult following among location-recording and live-performance sample-based musicians specifically for its size-to-capability ratio), actual retail availability is the point where “interesting announcement” becomes “thing you can put in a bag today.” The design has shifted toward 1010music’s newer Bento aesthetic rather than the original’s compact metal case — a tradeoff some longtime users are already debating, alongside knob placement relative to the new screen.
