Getting Started With 3D Printing: Slicing Your First Print

This beginner tutorial covers the step every new printer owner hits and nobody explains — slicing, the software that turns a 3D model into machine instructions, including layer height, infill, and supports, using the free OrcaSlicer.

A slicer is the software that takes a 3D model and converts it into the layer-by-layer instructions (the toolpath) your printer follows. What slicing actually is

A 3D printer can’t read a model file directly — it builds objects one thin horizontal layer at a time, so something has to decide where the nozzle goes on each of those layers. That’s slicing: the software “slices” your model into layers and generates the movement, temperature, and extrusion commands (G-code) the printer executes. Understanding this reframes the whole hobby. The model is just the shape; the slice is where most of your success or failure is decided, which is why the same file can print beautifully or fail completely depending on the settings.

The settings that matter first

Slicers expose hundreds of parameters, but a beginner only needs a handful to start. Layer height trades detail against print time (finer layers look better and take longer). Infill sets how solid the inside is — low for light decorative prints, higher for functional strength. Supports are temporary scaffolding the slicer adds under steep overhangs, since the printer can’t extrude plastic into thin air; learning to recognize when a model needs them, and orienting the model to need fewer, is a core skill.
