Fully funded residencies that accept digital and technology-based practice on equal terms with painting are rarer than they should be. This one does, and it is open now.
The Institut français x Cité internationale des arts Residencies 2027–2028 place artists and cultural professionals in Paris for an extended stay, with the costs actually covered rather than partially offset.
The details

- Duration: three, six or nine months, within a residency period running April 2027 to April 2028

Disciplines
The accepted list is long and, unusually, explicit about technology-based work: architecture, landscape and urban planning; street art, circus and puppetry; plastic art; comics; cinema; digital creation; art criticism and curating; dance and performance; design; gastronomy; literature; art professions; fashion; music; photography; theatre.
“Digital creation” appearing as a named category rather than being quietly folded into “plastic art” is the reason this one is worth flagging to this audience. It means the panel expects applications from people doing software, interactive and media work, and it means you are not spending half your application explaining why your practice belongs.
The catch you need to plan around
Applicants must be nominated by a cultural partner — either a French cultural organisation or a foreign cultural institution.
This is not a form you fill in alone on October 7th. It is a process that requires an institution to put you forward, which means a conversation with a gallery, festival, arts centre, embassy cultural service or Institut français local office, and it means having that conversation now rather than in the final week.
If you don’t currently have an institutional relationship that could produce a nomination, this specific call is probably not the one to chase — but it is worth knowing the requirement exists, because nomination-gated funding is common at this level and the relationship is the thing you build over years, not days.
With no age limit, worldwide eligibility, travel and visa costs covered and a stipend on top, the terms are at the generous end of what’s available. The nomination requirement is what keeps the applicant pool manageable.
