This Kinetic Sculpture Has Been Growing Fractals Out of Video Feedback Since 2003

Dave Blair's 'The Light Herder' turns raw analog video feedback — a camera pointed at its own screen through beam-splitter glass — into an instrument you crank and dial by hand, now rebuilt around 4K displays after two decades of iteration.

Most generative-fractal work today runs on a GPU. Dave Blair’s “The Light Herder” doesn’t use one at all — it grows recursive, blooming patterns the old-fashioned way, by pointing a camera at the screen showing its own output and letting the feedback loop do the rest. “When the camera sees itself,” Blair puts it, “a universe is born.” The current version, unveiled this year, is the fourth major hardware generation of a piece Blair has been building since 2003.

Two decades of the same idea, four different bodies

The project started as a single standard-definition CRT rig in Provincetown, Massachusetts, rewired again in 2007 with custom analog control knobs, then rebuilt in 2020–2022 as an HD, multi-monitor unit on a t-slot aluminum frame. The 2026 version is the most ambitious yet: five custom 4K displays, each paired with a camera through beam-splitter glass, all housed in hand-built mahogany enclosures with large mechanical cranks. A Teensy microcontroller translates analog knob turns — hue, saturation, brightness, contrast — into live control over the displays, while the cranks physically sweep the cameras back and forth and in full 360-degree rotations, changing the geometry of the feedback loop itself in real time.

None of the resulting imagery is rendered. Every spiral, cell structure, DNA-like strand, and fractal bloom the piece produces comes directly out of the physical feedback between camera and screen — the same underlying phenomenon behind decades of analog video-synthesizer art, pushed here into a purpose-built, playable instrument rather than a lab curiosity.

Built to be played, not watched

Blair describes operating the piece less like running a machine and more like performing on one: “the operator ‘plays’ the Device like a musical instrument,” turning knobs and cranking cameras to steer the feedback into new shapes on the fly. That framing matters for where this fits on a site that mostly covers projection mapping and screen-based installations under interactive art — The Light Herder skips the screen-as-canvas model entirely and treats the camera-and-monitor loop itself as the instrument, closer in spirit to a modular synthesizer than a video projector.

The piece has picked up real recognition over its two-decade run, with past coverage in Make Magazine, Boing Boing, Kottke, and earlier CDM write-ups, and reported admiration from figures including cognitive scientist Douglas Hofstadter and fractal-geometry researcher Heinz-Otto Peitgen — an unusually long and well-documented lineage for a one-person hardware art project.
