The Best LED Diffuser Might Already Be in Your Kitchen Drawer

Maker Davisan1001 built a clean enclosure for a 64×64 RGB LED matrix using a slicer trick to print the light-blocking grid and ordinary parchment paper as the diffusion layer.

The hard part of building a clean-looking LED matrix display was never the electronics — it’s stopping light from one pixel bleeding into its neighbors while still giving each one an even, soft glow. Maker Davisan1001’s enclosure for a 64×64 RGB LED matrix, mounted around a Raspberry Pi, solves that with two tricks that skip custom optics entirely.

Letting the slicer draw the grid

Rather than modeling a light-blocking grid by hand in CAD, Davisan1001 found the 3D printer’s own slicer could generate one automatically: printing a flat square with a grid-pattern infill and zero solid top or bottom layers produces exactly the kind of light-blocking dividing wall structure a matrix diffuser needs, with no manual grid-drawing required. It’s the kind of trick that comes from understanding what a slicer’s settings actually produce as a side effect, rather than only using them as intended.

Testing diffusers from around the house

For the diffusion layer sitting on top of that grid, the build process tested ordinary household materials before settling on one: plain white paper blocked too much light to be usable, wax paper “handles poorly,” but parchment paper turned out to be close to ideal — thin, easy to work with, flat and evenly colored, and just opaque enough to properly diffuse each pixel without dimming the display too much. The final stack is straightforward: the 3D-printed grid, a parchment paper diffusion layer, and a clear plastic sheet on top, all stacked directly over the LED matrix and Raspberry Pi mount.

A reminder that not every fix needs to be exotic

Diffusion is a well-trodden problem in the LED-matrix hobbyist space, with plenty of purpose-made acrylic and vellum products sold specifically for it — Davisan1001’s build is a useful data point that a kitchen staple, tested rather than assumed, can match or beat them for a fraction of the cost and zero shipping wait.
