Wrist-based gesture control has generally worked by reading how the whole wrist moves — an inertial measurement unit tracking motion, inferring a tap or swipe from the resulting acceleration pattern. Doublepoint’s new $249 Developer Kit, unveiled at CES 2026 and shipping to preorders, adds a second, more precise signal on top of that: optical sensing tuned to detect the subtle movement of tendons under the skin, the same physical signal that drives finger motion in the first place.

What’s actually in the kit
The reference band is built around Ambiq’s Apollo510 system-on-chip, chosen specifically for continuous, always-on gesture recognition at low power draw — a meaningful constraint for anything meant to run all day on a wrist-worn battery. Motion tracking runs through an inertial measurement unit from STMicroelectronics, while ams OSRAM’s optical sensing technology handles the tendon-movement detection that improves gesture accuracy beyond what motion tracking alone can reliably distinguish. The kit supports subtle interactions — tap, pinch-and-hold, swipe — usable across smart rings, wristbands, and smartwatches, and ships in a flexible reference-band form factor built around the same compute and sensor architecture major wearable OEMs already use in shipping products.
Why tendon sensing is the more useful signal
A pinch gesture and a similar-looking incidental wrist motion can produce very similar accelerometer signatures, which is exactly why motion-only gesture recognition tends toward false positives or requires exaggerated, deliberate movements to work reliably. Tendon movement is a much more direct proxy for what a finger is actually doing, independent of how the whole arm happens to be moving at the same time — which is why pairing optical tendon sensing with motion tracking, rather than relying on motion alone, is the more technically interesting part of this kit relative to previous gesture wearables.
Why a reference kit matters more than a single product
Doublepoint isn’t shipping this as a single consumer gadget — it’s a developer reference platform, paired with WowPlay, a companion freemium app bringing wrist gesture control to Android and WearOS devices, aimed at giving OEMs and app developers a working starting point built on the same sensor and compute stack already used in shipping wearables. That positioning matters: a reference kit built to be adopted by other companies’ hardware has a much larger potential reach than a single branded product, if the underlying sensing approach turns out to be reliable enough for OEMs to build on directly.
