Glitch’n, a free online electronics course out of Arizona State University, teaches complete beginners to build working audio circuits on breadboards — no soldering, no prior electronics background, and no cost. The project is led by Seth Thorn, Assistant Professor of Interactive Media, with a genuinely cross-disciplinary team behind it: electrical engineering, quantitative research, economics, and music learning and teaching are all represented among the named collaborators, and the work is supported by the National Science Foundation.
Real circuits, not simulations
The course has students assemble functioning sound-generating hardware — the curriculum description covers “assembling oscillators, generative beats, filters, and noise on breadboard circuits” — using integrated circuits with roots in 1970s-era chip design, the same lineage that underlies a lot of the DIY synth world’s cheapest and most hackable building blocks. Two named projects anchor the course: a $3 generative drummer and a modular drum machine for $5. Both are genuinely functional instruments once built, not simplified stand-ins for the real thing — the barrier to entry is cost and instruction, not the fidelity of what gets built.
A pathway, not just a lesson
Glitch’n is aimed at “Arizona youth and their families,” but its structure is built to extend past a single course. Graduates can move into CTRL, a paid cohort program where participants become community educators who co-facilitate pop-up workshops, build teaching experience, and make industry connections — a real, paid on-ramp into electronics and engineering work, not just a certificate. That progression (learn the circuit, then get paid to teach the circuit to the next group) is the part worth underlining: it treats a $5 drum machine build as the entry point to a career pathway, not the whole point.
