Google's Cheapest Image Model Might Matter More Than Its Best One

Nano Banana 2 Lite generates a 1K image in about 4 seconds for roughly 3 cents, and pairing it with the new Gemini Omni Flash video model turns expensive video generation into the last step of a cheap pipeline, not the first.

Most coverage of generative AI models chases the same question: which one produces the best output. Google’s newest release, Nano Banana 2 Lite, is optimized for a different question entirely — which one is cheap and fast enough to use for every draft along the way to a final image, not just the final image itself.

What actually shipped

Nano Banana 2 Lite (internally, gemini-3.1-flash-lite-image) generates a 1K-resolution text-to-image output in about 4 seconds for roughly $0.034 per image, available now through Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, and the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. It slots into a four-tier model ladder Google is now shipping side by side: Lite for speed and cost, Nano Banana 2 as the general-purpose default, Nano Banana Pro for complex professional work, and the original Nano Banana kept around as a legacy model developers are being pushed to migrate off of. Every tier embeds SynthID watermarking by default.

Why the cheap tier is the more interesting release

A model this fast and this cheap changes the economics of iteration, not just the economics of a single image. Pairing Nano Banana 2 Lite with Gemini’s new Omni Flash video model creates a genuinely different workflow: generate several image concepts cheaply with Lite, pick the one that actually works, and only then spend the expensive video-generation step animating something already validated — rather than generating an expensive video directly from a prompt and hoping it lands. Omni Flash itself produces roughly 10 seconds of video for about $0.10 per second, and the chained workflow supports stacking up to three sequential image-to-video edits using session history.

What this actually changes for working practice

Every generative tool covered on this site so far has competed on capability — more control, better fidelity, longer clips. Nano Banana 2 Lite is explicitly not trying to win on any of those axes; it’s positioned purely as the fast, disposable step before the expensive one. That’s a meaningfully different design goal, and it’s a preview of where the rest of the generative-AI stack is likely headed once quality stops being the main bottleneck: toward cheap, fast draft tools that exist specifically to make the expensive final step more likely to succeed on the first real attempt.
