Conference announcements are usually worth a line. This one is worth a piece, because the reason for it describes a real gap — and it’s a gap a lot of people doing creative technology are standing in.
HomelabFest runs 12–14 September 2027 in St. Charles, near St. Louis and closer to the airport than downtown. It was announced by Jeff Geerling.
The stated gap
The reasoning, as announced: makers, software engineers, embedded developers and HPC professionals all have their own gatherings, but nothing focuses on:
- Energy-efficient servers
- Self-hosted software that respects privacy
- Keeping old hardware in service
- Rack mounting on a budget
Homelab content creators are being invited, with some already listed on the event site, and homelab and self-hosting companies are being approached.
Why this belongs on a creative-technology site
Because the infrastructure problem in creative technology is a homelab problem, and almost nobody talks about it that way.
Consider what a working studio or a long-running installation actually needs. Somewhere to store and serve terabytes of media. A machine that renders overnight. Something that runs continuously for a three-month exhibition without a subscription or a network dependency. A way to keep a 2014 workstation useful because it still has the PCIe slots you need. None of that is glamorous and all of it determines whether the work is sustainable.
Each of the four stated topics maps onto something we’ve written about recently:
Energy-efficient servers — the same calculation as choosing a microcontroller over a Pi for an always-on piece, one tier up.
Privacy-respecting self-hosted software — increasingly the deciding factor for institutional work. An installation that processes visitor data locally is a far easier conversation with a venue than one that sends it to an API. It’s the same argument we made for thermal sensing over cameras, and for running Audio8 locally rather than paying per minute for a piece that listens for three months.
Keeping old hardware in service — media art’s permanent condition. Work built on a specific GPU, capture card or OS version has to run on that hardware or be rewritten, and the skills for keeping ageing machines alive are conservation skills.
Rack mounting on a budget — every AV rig is a rack, and most are assembled by people who learned it the hard way.
Worth flagging a year out
A September 2027 date is well outside our usual four-weeks-ahead coverage window, and we’re noting it now for a specific reason: first editions of conferences need attendees and speakers early, and the call for participation will close long before the event. If the subject matter is yours, the useful time to know is now, not next August.
Added to our conference calendar, with the preview due around mid-August 2027.
