IMAGINE! PLAY! runs August 7–16 in the atrium of Yuen Long Theatre, part of Hong Kong’s 2026 International Arts Carnival — free admission, open 9am–10pm most days, built around a deliberately informal “music interaction + casual picnic + art exploration” format that moves the show out of a ticketed auditorium and into open community space.
The centerpiece is built to be touched
The exhibition’s core installation, Composition Corner, is an interactive piece specifically designed to let visitors — children in particular — build their own melodies and musical arrangements directly, rather than observing a finished composed work. Alongside it, local artists Soilworm and Moon.noon present multimedia pieces developed in direct response to the broader International Arts Carnival’s programming, giving the installation a specific curatorial throughline rather than functioning as a standalone activity booth.
Why the format is the actual story
Interactive art installations in major institutions (the kind regularly covered here — the Frist, MAAT, SXSW London) are usually ticketed, indoor, and framed as a gallery experience even when the work itself is playful. IMAGINE! PLAY! inverts that on purpose: it’s explicitly not staged as a formal exhibition to walk through quietly — the “picnic” framing is a real design choice, positioning the installation as something to encounter casually, the way you’d stumble into a public plaza performance, rather than something you plan a dedicated visit around. For a venue that has “served the New Territories West community for many years,” per its own framing, using its own atrium — the space you pass through, not the space you buy a ticket to enter — as the exhibition site is a specific bet that art accessibility is partly about physical threshold, not just admission price.
