The Usual Suspects' JADE recreates the Roland JD-990 — the 1993 rackmount 'Super JD' with nearly double the JD-800's waveform count — and it's shaping up as free, cross-platform, and running in every major plugin format.

The Usual Suspects — the developer behind free simulators of the Access Virus, Roland JP-8000, and various vintage Waldorf synths — released a public alpha of JADE, a free simulator of the Roland JD-990, available now to supporters on the developer’s Discord.

The JD-990’s actual claim to fame

The JD-990, released in 1993, is an enhanced rackmount version of the popular JD-800 keyboard synth — Roland gave it the “Super JD” designation for good reason. Beyond sharing the JD-800’s core capabilities, the 990 offers nearly double the waveform count (195 PCM waveforms versus the 800’s set), plus oscillator sync, frequency cross-modulation, ring modulation, and a built-in multi-effects processor — genuine additions rather than just a rack-mounted repackaging of the same engine. Among synth enthusiasts specifically interested in Roland’s rompler-era instruments (sample-based oscillators combined with subtractive-style synthesis shaping), the 990 has a reputation as the more capable, less appreciated sibling to the 800’s greater name recognition.

What’s actually available right now

JADE is currently in public alpha, gated to supporters via Discord rather than a general public download — an earlier and more limited stage than a typical “free release” announcement, worth being clear about. Planned format support spans VST2, VST3, AU, LV2, and CLAP, across macOS (native Apple Silicon and Intel), Linux, and Windows — a broad cross-platform commitment consistent with the developer’s prior releases.

Why a specific developer’s track record matters here

The Usual Suspects doesn’t build conventional software models of vintage synths — its prior releases (JE-8086, emulating the JP-8000/JP-8080) work by reverse-engineering the actual hardware’s DSP chip and running the original Roland firmware inside a cycle-accurate emulation of that chip, rather than approximating the sound with generic modeling. That’s a fundamentally different, much harder engineering approach than most “vintage synth emulator” plugins take, and it’s why a JADE alpha is worth covering at all: a track record of shipping genuinely firmware-accurate emulations, not just plausible-sounding approximations, is a much stronger signal than an early-access announcement from an unproven source.

If JADE follows the same approach for the JD-990, it would mean running Roland’s actual 1993 firmware rather than a reconstruction of what that firmware probably did — a meaningfully higher bar for authenticity than most free synth emulations attempt.
