Tim Exile's Karst Puts a Cableless Modular Studio in a Browser Tab — and Aims It at Songwriters

The node-based system launched July 28 as a private 0.1 beta at £69: acid, chord, kick and snare machines that auto-patch when you drop them in, third-party plugin hosting, cloud-saved patches, and a standalone app and DAW plugin promised for Q4 2026.

Karst, released July 28 by British musician and instrument-builder Tim Exile, is a node-based modular audio environment that runs in a browser tab. The comparison everyone reaches for is Native Instruments Reaktor — Exile has spent years building Reaktor ensembles, so the lineage is real — but the design goal is pointedly different. Reaktor is a workshop for building tools. Karst is built for songwriters: composition and performance are wired into the environment rather than bolted onto it afterward.

It’s available now as private beta 0.1 at £69 (down from a £99 list price), with a free in-browser trial, and Exile has said the standalone app and DAW plugin arrive in Q4 2026. Patches live in the cloud, so you log in anywhere and your work is there; offline use waits for the native builds.

Cableless by default is the interesting design choice

Most modular environments make you earn your sound: drag a module, drag another, then draw the cable between them. Karst inverts that. Drop an instrument or effect in and it connects itself, following the obvious signal path. If you want something less obvious, you add cables manually and route it precisely.

That sounds like a small ergonomic detail and isn’t. The cost of modular software has always been that the patching becomes the activity — an hour in, you have a beautiful signal graph and no music. Auto-connection means the default state of a Karst session is “making sound,” and the cable work becomes an opt-in escalation for when you actually need it. It’s the same instinct behind semi-modular hardware, where a normalled signal path gets you to a usable voice before you touch a patch cable.

What’s in the box, and what shows up next week

The initial machine set covers ground a songwriter would reach for immediately: acid, chord, kick, and snare synth modules, plus effects including resonators and modulation reverbs. Karst will also host third-party plugins inside a system, which matters more than it sounds — it means the environment doesn’t have to win the “does it have every sound I need” argument to be useful, since your existing instruments can sit inside the patch.

Exile has said new instruments will be added weekly. A drip-feed release model is a real bet on the browser-first delivery: there’s no installer to push, so the tool your patch opens in next Tuesday can be materially more capable than today’s. It also means early adopters are buying a trajectory as much as a product — worth naming clearly at the 0.1 stage.

The honest caveats

This is a private beta at version 0.1, sold at a discount that reflects that. Browser-based audio has come a long way, but running your instrument in a tab means living with the platform’s latency, audio-device handling, and CPU ceiling until the native builds land in Q4. Cloud-stored patches are a genuine convenience and a genuine dependency. And “for songwriters” is a promise that only gets tested by whether people finish tracks in it, not by whether the patching feels good — which it appears to.

Still, the pitch is one of the more coherent ideas in modular software in a while: keep the depth, delete the setup tax, and let people patch their way into a song instead of into an afternoon.
