Mach Devices, a young Hong Kong hardware outfit, has revealed the MD-7: a palm-sized synthesizer, $299 / £230, due to ship in September 2026 — and already sold out on pre-orders after the demo video went around. Two things make it worth more than a passing glance. The first is the control surface: two large discs driven by field-oriented control (FOC) motors that don’t just read your finger, they push back at it. The second is that Mach Devices says the instrument’s firmware — DSP engine, modulation system, and sequencer — will be published on GitHub for owners to modify, extend, or replace.
Knobs that tell you where you are
A conventional synth knob is a one-way street: you turn it, the machine reads it, and you find out what happened by looking at a screen or listening. Motorized haptic controls close that loop. Because an FOC motor can vary its resistance in real time, the same disc can present detents at musically useful values, hard end-stops at the limits of a parameter, and a change in drag as you move between ranges — all felt through the fingertip, with no glance required.
The demo makes the argument concretely: the discs handle menu navigation and parameter tweaking, but also DJ-style scrubbing through a 16-step sequence and a drum looper, where the tactile feedback stops the control from feeling like a featureless spinner. For an instrument this small — a 1.65-inch IPS display, a 13-button one-octave keyboard, three additional buttons — offloading information into your hands rather than onto a tiny screen is a genuinely smart trade.
A modest engine and an open door
The synth architecture itself is deliberately conventional: four oscillator waveforms, a resonant multimode filter, an ADSR envelope — textbook subtractive, which at this size is the right call. Connectivity covers dual USB-C (one for power; one carrying MIDI, audio out, and mic input from compatible USB microphones), a 3.5mm headphone output, and a microSD slot.
The open-source firmware is what turns a nice small synth into something more interesting. If the DSP engine and sequencer are genuinely modifiable, the MD-7 becomes a development platform with motorized haptic controls already attached — an unusual thing to be able to buy at $299. Anyone who has tried to prototype force-feedback interaction knows the hardware is the hard part; here it arrives assembled, and the interesting work starts at the code.
What to watch before you count on it
This is a first product from a new company, currently pre-order-only with a September target, and the interface is described as still in development. Small-batch hardware slips; “firmware will be on GitHub” is a promise until the repository is public and the license is stated. The engine as shown is more classic than adventurous, and motorized controls raise questions about battery draw and mechanical wear that only shipped units will answer.
But the direction is one this site keeps returning to: physical interfaces that carry information back to the player. A haptic knob that can render a detent wherever the patch says it should be is a small, concrete argument that the screen isn’t the only place a synth can tell you what it’s doing.
