Reborn from the Pokémon Go maker's mapping ambitions, Niantic Spatial pitches a large-scale visual positioning system — persistent, centimeter-accurate AR anchored to real places — as infrastructure for location-based art, not just games.

Niantic Spatial — the entity that carried forward the mapping and AR-infrastructure ambitions of Pokémon Go’s maker after the games business was spun off — expanded creator access to its visual positioning system this summer. A VPS uses a phone or headset camera to recognize exactly where it is in the real world by matching the view against a 3D map, enabling persistent, centimeter-accurate AR: a virtual object placed on a specific street corner stays on that corner, at the right scale and orientation, for everyone who looks, across sessions and devices.
