Step 1: Understand the node graph before building anything

Every effect in Notch is a chain of nodes — a video source feeds into processing nodes (color correction, distortion, compositing), which feed into an output node connected to the rendering viewport. Before building a first project, spend time just tracing existing example projects’ node graphs to understand the flow: what feeds into what, and where the actual output connection lives. Notch’s learning curve is almost entirely about internalizing this data-flow model — once that clicks, adding and rearranging effects becomes largely intuitive.

Step 2: Get live video into the graph first

The fastest way to confirm your setup works end-to-end is bringing a live or recorded video source into a basic node chain and seeing it appear in the real-time viewport, unmodified. Step 3: Post-FX nodes are where most visible style comes from

Once live video is flowing, Post-FX nodes handle the processing layer that gives raw footage its actual visual character — color grading, distortion, glitch effects, compositing multiple layers together. This is the highest-leverage place to spend early learning time: a small number of well-understood Post-FX nodes, combined in different orders and configurations, produces most of the distinctive visual styles you’ll recognize from touring visuals and installation work.

Step 4: Design against your real output surface, not a flat preview

Notch’s viewport gives you a flat preview by default, but installation and touring work almost never projects onto a flat, front-facing screen — projection mapping onto irregular surfaces, multi-screen touring rigs, and dome or curved-surface installations all distort a flat preview significantly. Set up your actual output geometry (a projection-mapped surface definition, a multi-display configuration) as early as possible in a project, the same way you’d test an interactive piece in its real install environment rather than trusting a desk-based preview.
