A standard Eurorack low-frequency oscillator cycles anywhere from roughly once a second to once every few minutes — slow, by audio standards, but still something a musician can sit and listen to complete. Olivia Artz Modular’s Patience, now live on Kickstarter, throws that assumption out entirely: its slowest settings stretch a single cycle across months, years, or literal decades.
An LFO built for a timescale nobody will hear finish
Patience is explicitly framed as the “lowest” frequency oscillator rather than just a low one — its range runs from ordinary seconds-scale modulation up through minutes, hours, days, months, years, and decades, all on a single module. That’s not a novelty spec bolted onto a conventional LFO; it’s the entire premise. A parameter set to modulate over a period of years produces a patch that’s technically alive and evolving the whole time, even though no single listening session — or in the more extreme settings, no single human lifetime of listening sessions — will ever actually capture a full cycle.
The module is a direct follow-up to Artz’s earlier Time Machine, which explored similar deep-time manipulation territory in modular synthesis; Patience pushes that same underlying interest in extreme time-scaling further out toward genuinely geological modulation rates.
Why the extreme end of the range is the point, not the gimmick
Modular synthesis has a long-running fascination with process music that unfolds slower than a human can fully perceive in one sitting — pieces meant to be installations or ongoing states rather than performances with a beginning and end. Patience gives that idea dedicated, purpose-built hardware rather than requiring a workaround through sequencer tricks or software clocking hacks. Whether a given patch owner ever actually leaves a Patience-modulated system running long enough to notice a year-scale shift is almost beside the point — the module makes that kind of deep-time composition a first-class option in a modular rack rather than an edge case nobody’s hardware was built to support.
