On July 18, reFX — the studio best known for the ubiquitous ROMpler Nexus — teased Rippler, a forthcoming physical-modeling synthesizer plugin. It’s the commercial version of a synth with an unusual backstory: developer Tiagolr released a physical-modeling synth called Rippler as a free download earlier in the year, then pulled it after reaching an agreement to bring it to market as a commercial product through a development company. reFX’s build fleshes out the engine with two additional wave-folding oscillators and two multimode filters on the main interface. What physical modeling actually does
Most synthesizers start from waveforms — sines, saws, squares — and shape them with filters and envelopes. Physical modeling takes a different route: it mathematically simulates how sound behaves in real physical systems, an exciter (a pluck, a strike, a burst of noise) setting a resonator (a string, a tube, a plate, a membrane) into motion. That’s why physically-modeled synths excel at organic, acoustic-adjacent, and “impossible instrument” sounds — mallets, bowed metal, blown pipes, and hybrids of all three. Rippler’s architecture leans directly into this, with two exciters (one supporting sample import plus tweakable noise) feeding two resonators offering various models and a fully customizable resonator editor.
Why the wave-folding and filters matter
The additions reFX put on the main panel — two wave-folding oscillators and two multimode filters — are what push Rippler beyond a purist modeling synth into more aggressive, designed territory. Wave folding adds harmonics by literally folding a waveform back on itself, a favorite trick for making sounds bite and shimmer; pairing that with the resonant, material character of physical modeling gives you both the organic body of a struck object and the electronic edge of West-Coast-style synthesis. It’s a combination aimed at sound designers who want physical modeling’s realism without being locked into “acoustic-sounding” results.
The bigger picture
Physical modeling has quietly become one of the livelier corners of synthesis, with free and open-source options (Tiagolr’s original among them) sitting alongside established commercial engines. reFX picking up a well-liked free synth and giving it a commercial home is a vote of confidence in the category — and, for producers, a signal worth watching. As with any teaser, the caveats are real: no price, no firm date, and the proof will be in the sound and the CPU cost. But a Nexus-scale developer investing in physical modeling is a genuinely interesting move.
