Getting Started: Resin 3D Printing for Detailed Art Objects and Miniatures

Resin (MSLA) printers trade FDM's speed and convenience for dramatically finer detail — the right call for sculptural work, miniatures, and anything where visible layer lines are the enemy.

Resin (MSLA) 3D printing works fundamentally differently from the filament-based FDM printing covered in an earlier tutorial here — and for detailed sculptural work, miniatures, and anything where visible layer lines would ruin the piece, it’s usually the better choice. The tradeoff: resin printing has its own workflow, its own failure modes, and real safety precautions FDM printing doesn’t require.

Step 1: Set up ventilation and PPE before your first print, not after

Liquid resin is a skin irritant and sensitizer before it’s cured, and it stays somewhat reactive even after UV curing until fully post-processed. Nitrile gloves are non-negotiable every time you touch uncured resin, and the printer needs to run in a ventilated space — resin off-gasses volatile compounds during printing, especially noticeable with certain resin formulations. This isn’t optional caution for a hobby; treat it as part of the actual setup checklist, not an afterthought once something starts smelling off.

Step 2: Understand what the printer is actually doing

An MSLA printer cures liquid resin layer by layer using a UV light source shining through an LCD screen that masks each layer’s cross-section, building the model upside down, suspended from a build plate that lifts out of a resin vat. That inverted orientation matters practically: your model needs support structures connecting it to the build plate, generated in slicing software before printing — skipping or under-supporting this step is the single most common cause of a failed print (a model that detaches mid-print and sinks into the vat).

Step 3: Post-processing is part of the print, not cleanup afterward

A resin print isn’t finished when it comes off the build plate — it needs an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wash to remove uncured resin from the surface, followed by a UV cure (either sunlight or a dedicated curing station) to fully harden the material and stop it being tacky or under-strength. Skipping or rushing this stage is the second most common source of disappointing results: a model that looks finished right off the printer but is still soft, tacky, or under-cured until it’s gone through wash-and-cure properly.

Step 4: Small test prints before committing to a big one

Because resin printing is slower per-layer than FDM and failures are more consequential (a failed large print wastes significantly more resin than a failed FDM print wastes filament), run a small calibration or test print — a standard test model, not your actual project — after any change to settings, resin brand, or printer. This catches exposure-time and support-density problems on something disposable before you find them on the piece you actually wanted.
