Roblox's 'Build' Enters Public Alpha: Make a Playable 3D Game From a Text Prompt, on Your Phone

Starting July 28 in New Zealand, Roblox's AI creation tool turns a plain-language description into an initial game — mechanics, environments, characters, styling, and sound — generated by a mix of proprietary and open-source models, and built entirely on mobile.

Roblox Build — the platform’s new AI-powered creation tool — entered public alpha on July 28, initially limited to age-verified users in New Zealand aged nine and up (only those 16+ can publish to a global audience). The pitch is a genuine shift for the platform: describe a game in ordinary language and Build generates an initial project complete with gameplay mechanics, environments, characters, visual styling, and sound, using a combination of proprietary and open-source AI models. Crucially, it’s mobile-native — the first time Roblox has let people create, not just play, directly from a phone or tablet. A free base tier is planned alongside paid options for power users.

Why “creation on the phone” is the real story

Roblox already has one of the largest creator ecosystems in the world, but making things on it has always meant Roblox Studio on a desktop — a real skill barrier. Moving creation to the device where its enormous young audience already lives, and letting a text prompt produce a working first draft, collapses the distance between having an idea and having something playable. That’s the same “describe it, get a starting point, then refine” pattern reshaping every creative tool this site covers — but aimed at an audience of millions of would-be makers who were previously stuck on the consumption side of the app.

The 3D-generation piece matters beyond games

The engine under Build is what’s technically interesting: Roblox says its proprietary models generate functional 3D objects and full 3D scenes that drop into working games alongside the existing toolset. Generating usable, functional 3D geometry (not just a pretty mesh, but something with the structure a game can actually run) is one of the harder problems in generative media, and it’s the same frontier NVIDIA’s Cosmos, World Labs’ Marble, and FLUX 3 are pushing from other directions. Roblox has a distinctive advantage here: an immense, live dataset of what real user-made 3D worlds look like and how people play them.

The honest caveats

It’s an alpha, in one country, and AI-generated games raise the obvious hard questions Roblox will have to answer at scale: quality and sameness (prompt-to-game tools tend toward homogenized output), moderation and safety on a platform with a young user base, and how human creators who invested years in Studio feel about one-sentence competitors. “Generate a whole game” also invites the usual gap between an impressive demo and a genuinely fun, coherent experience. But as a statement of direction — AI creation tools meeting a massive creator platform, on mobile, from a text prompt — it’s one of the more consequential launches of the summer, and worth watching as it expands beyond New Zealand.
