RootBoard Turns a $15 Raspberry Pi Zero Into a Fully Open Pocket Linux Terminal

The crowdfunded cyberdeck shell — a 3.5-inch screen, a 70-key keyboard, and exposed I/O for ESP32/Arduino/Pico projects — shipped its entire PCB, schematics, and enclosure files publicly, and cleared its funding goal nearly 5x over.

RootBoard, an open-hardware pocket Linux terminal built by developer Dian Lieu, launched on Kickstarter on July 1 and closed its campaign well past target — $23,799 raised from 174 backers against a $5,000 goal, an average pledge of roughly $137. It’s a compact cyberdeck-style shell purpose-built for the Raspberry Pi Zero ecosystem, aimed squarely at makers, developers, and hardware tinkerers who want a genuinely pocketable Linux terminal without building an enclosure from scratch.

Deliberately narrow, on purpose

RootBoard’s spec sheet reads like a list of restraint decisions rather than a maximalist feature list. The 3.5-inch color display has no touch support — navigation is keyboard or external mouse only, via the integrated 70-key QWERTY membrane keyboard. The board slot natively and exclusively supports the Raspberry Pi Zero, Zero W, and Zero 2 W — it doesn’t fit a Pi 5 or other larger boards, a hard compatibility boundary rather than a launch-day limitation to be patched later. And the shell ships without a battery or SD card — you supply a Pi Zero board of your choice, a MicroSD card loaded with Raspberry Pi OS, and a single 3.7V 18650 cell if you want it to run untethered, which Lieu says was a deliberate call “to keep costs down and simplify international” shipping.

What it does include beyond the core terminal shell: built-in speakers, internal rechargeable battery management circuitry (distinct from the battery cell itself), and — the detail that matters most for creative and maker use — integrated I/O ports mapped down its sides that interface directly with ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico, Arduino, and STM32 boards for IoT and electronics projects. That turns RootBoard from a novelty retro-computing shell into something closer to a portable dev console for anyone regularly prototyping with those chips in the field, away from a desk.

Fully open, not just open-adjacent

RootBoard’s PCB Gerber layouts, full schematics, and 3D-printable enclosure files are being published publicly on GitHub — a genuine open-hardware commitment rather than an “open in spirit” marketing claim with the actual design files kept proprietary. For the cyberdeck-building community specifically, that means RootBoard’s design becomes a base other makers can fork, modify, and remix, rather than a closed product they can only buy and use as-is.

Deliveries for backers are scheduled to begin in November 2026.
