Rotor Studio — the speculative-design duo of Ángeles Angulo and Román Torre, whose earlier work includes the large-scale light installation PulsØ-Ø and the message-generating piece Mechanisms of Fascination — published “Moving Cloud” this week: a functioning weather station built specifically to make climate data feel like something rather than just read as a number.
A real weather station, repurposed as an instrument
Per the project’s own description, Moving Cloud “translates real-time environmental data into visual and sound languages to create a perceptual experience to feel the climate beyond its numerical representation.” The build runs on a Raspberry Pi reading live sensor data, housed in a body combining 3D-printed components with CNC-milled aluminum, and incorporates a webcam as an additional environmental input alongside the standard weather sensing. Rather than outputting a dashboard or a numeric readout, the system converts its live readings directly into ongoing visual and sound behavior — the piece changes because the weather outside is changing, continuously, without a human curating which moment gets shown.
Sensing as the whole point
This continues a throughline in Rotor Studio’s practice — a consistent interest in using technology to make an abstract or invisible system perceptible, rather than to simply optimize or automate it. PulsØ-Ø, their prior light installation, worked as a legible ultra-low-resolution screen; Moving Cloud applies the same instinct to weather data specifically, treating temperature, humidity, or air quality (whatever the sensor package actually reads) not as information to be logged but as a live input driving a piece that behaves differently minute to minute. It sits in a small but genuinely useful category of environmental art: pieces built with functioning sensor hardware rather than pre-recorded or simulated data, meaning what you’re seeing or hearing corresponds to conditions actually happening at that moment.
Why this is worth the space
Data-sonification and climate-visualization projects are common as one-off student demos; fewer of them are built as durable, fabricated objects (CNC aluminum, not a laptop and a projector) meant to run continuously as a standing instrument rather than a single-showing performance piece. That durability is the detail worth noting — Moving Cloud reads less like an art-school prototype and more like a piece of infrastructure that happens to also be an artwork.
