Snap revealed its sixth-generation Specs at AWE in June. Today the company holds its full launch event in Los Angeles, where CEO Evan Spiegel gives the first in-depth demonstration. Pre-orders are already open in the US, UK and France at $2,195, with a $200 refundable deposit and shipping expected in fall 2026.
Unlike the passthrough headsets that dominate this category, Specs are true AR: transparent optics you look through, in a frame you could plausibly wear outside.
The hardware
- Display: Snap’s own liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) system, with a 51-degree field of view that Snap says covers 30% more display area than the fifth-generation developer Specs, and 16 million colors
- Weight: 132–136 grams, in Swiss TR90 polymer, in two sizes (roughly 47mm and 52mm), with prescription inserts and multiple nose pads
- Compute: two Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, one for computer vision and one for running AR content, delivering 7ms motion-to-photon latency
- Lenses: electrochromic, going from clear to tinted in about 10 seconds, so they work indoors and in sunlight
- Battery: up to 4 hours of mixed use, or about 20 hours with the charging case
- Privacy: on-device processing, permission prompts, and an LED that indicates active recording
The 51-degree figure is the honest limit here. It’s a window in front of you, not a takeover of your vision. But it’s a large window by the standards of glasses this size, and the sub-10ms latency is what keeps anchored content from swimming.
What makes this interesting for creative developers
The hardware is only half the announcement. The other half is the toolchain:
- Lens Studio remains the main authoring environment, and Snap has added agentic development support through integrations with Claude Code, Codex and Cursor. Whatever you think of AI-assisted coding, it means the fastest path from idea to a running AR scene now runs through a prompt.
- A new Native Development Kit opens up development below the Lens layer, for anyone who needs performance or control that the Lens runtime doesn’t give them.
- The library is already large. Snap counts millions of Lenses built over years of Snapchat AR, plus hundreds of experiences made for Specs.
That combination matters because the biggest problem with AR glasses has never been optics. It’s been that nobody has anything to run on them. Snap’s advantage is a decade of creators who already know Lens Studio.
The catch
$2,195 is not a consumer price, and Snap hasn’t named a hard ship date beyond “fall.” Four hours of battery means a working session, not a day. And the entire proposition rests on whether anyone builds something you’d want on your face for more than a demo.
But this is the most complete attempt so far: real see-through AR, standalone, wearable weight, with a mature authoring tool and a native SDK behind it. For artists and interaction designers who have been waiting for AR to leave the phone, it’s the first platform worth budgeting time for.
