This week, free emulations of Elektron’s Machinedrum and Monomachine arrived, and those two machines made one sequencing idea famous: the parameter lock. Once you understand it, you’ll recognize it on grooveboxes, trackers like the Dirtywave M8, and a growing number of DAW sequencers. This guide covers the basics without assuming any particular hardware.
1. The grid
A step sequencer splits a bar into equal slots, usually 16 steps (sixteenth notes in 4/4). Each step is on or off. Turn a step on and that sound plays on that step. That’s the whole model, and it’s why step sequencers are so quick for drums.
First exercise: on a kick track, turn on steps 1, 5, 9 and 13. That’s four-on-the-floor. On a snare or clap track, turn on 5 and 13. On a hi-hat track, turn on every odd step. You now have a beat.
2. The problem with plain loops
Play that for thirty seconds and it wears thin. Every hi-hat sounds identical, and every bar repeats exactly. Human drummers never do that. On a basic sequencer, the only fix is building separate patterns and switching between them.
3. Parameter locks
A parameter lock (Elektron calls it a “p-lock”) attaches a sound setting to one step only. On most hardware you hold the step and turn a knob. That step now plays with the changed value, and every other step keeps the track’s default.
Try these on the hi-hat track:
- Lock decay shorter on steps 3, 7, 11 and 15 so they sound like tight, closed hats between longer ones.
- Lock a higher pitch on step 15 to set up the turnaround.
- Lock more reverb or delay send on just the last snare of the bar.
Now one pattern moves. Nothing new was programmed. Individual steps just stopped being identical. The key insight is that sound design becomes part of the sequence: a filter sweep can live inside the pattern instead of in your hands or an automation lane.
4. Trig conditions and probability
Parameter locks change how a step sounds. Trig conditions change whether it plays.
- Probability: set a ghost-note snare to play 50% of the time. Every bar comes out a little different.
- Ratio conditions: “1:4” means play only on the first of every four passes. It’s ideal for a crash on the downbeat of each four-bar phrase.
- Fill conditions: the step plays only while you hold a fill button, so you can bring in a live variation on demand.
Combine them and a one-bar pattern can sound like a long, evolving part.
5. A first project
- Build the four-on-the-floor beat from section 1.
- Add three parameter locks to the hi-hats and one to the snare.
- Add a 50% probability ghost snare on step 8 or 16.
- Add a 1:4 crash or open hat on step 1.
- Let it loop for two minutes and tweak only locks and conditions, never the grid.
If it still sounds alive after two minutes, you’ve got the technique.
Where to practice
On hardware, any current Elektron box works. Their manuals are excellent, and the sequencer works the same way across the range. With no hardware, look for per-step parameters in trackers (the M8’s effect columns do a similar job), in Bitwig’s and Ableton’s step sequencers, and in free software such as VCV Rack sequencer modules. The Machinedrum and Monomachine emulators work too, if you own the ROMs.
