While AI Writes Songs, Synth Makers Are Betting on Fewer Screens, Not More

NAMM and Superbooth 2026 both leaned hardware-first — granular synthesis, standalone sampling, and physical MIDI control — running in the opposite direction from generative music tools.

Two of the year’s biggest music-hardware showcases, NAMM and Superbooth, both landed on the same throughline in 2026: gear built for producers who want to work with their hands and put the laptop away, arriving in the same year that AI generation tools have made the laptop’s role in music-making bigger than ever.

What actually shipped

Tasty Chips Electronics used Superbooth to reveal the GR-2, a second-generation hardware granular sampler with a fully responsive touchscreen, 120 modulation destinations, and a drawing mode for XY modulation — smaller and cheaper than its GR-MEGA sibling while keeping most of its capability, priced from €849 early-bird on Kickstarter with shipping targeted for September. Oxi Instruments shipped the OXI E16, a compact multi-scene MIDI controller built around state morphing and parameter recording, since the end of June. On the sampler side, Akai’s MPC XL leaned into the same standalone philosophy — an expanded pad layout built for finger drumming and full track-building without a computer, with DAW import only as a finishing step, not a starting one. And on the free-software end, the KVR Developer Challenge’s 2026 crop included releases like Tilr’s TetraOP wavetable FM synth and SocaLabs’ Identity, a math-formula-based polysynth — proof the hands-on, tinkerer ethos extends past hardware into how plugins get built too.

The contrast that matters

None of this is a rejection of AI music tools — Suno Studio’s push toward getting AI-generated stems into a real DAW, covered here previously, is very much part of the same 2026 landscape. But it’s a notable split in where the industry’s energy is going: one half of music tech is building toward faster generation and less manual work, and the other half — the half showing up at NAMM and Superbooth — is building instruments that deliberately slow a producer down to a single physical interface with no undo button. Both directions are healthy for the field; the interesting part is that they’re accelerating at the same time rather than one replacing the other.
