Reading the room, literally

Synterra’s most distinctive design choice happens before a single note sounds: on power-up, it uses the ambient magnetic field of wherever it’s sitting as a reference point, positioning itself relative to its surroundings fresh each time it’s turned on — meaning the same instrument in a different room, or the same room at a different time, starts from a genuinely different baseline. From there, it processes incoming signals — comparable in concept to how instruments like the Instruo Pocket Scion read signals from living organisms or other environmental sources — through probability and quantizer structures, producing an algorithmic arrangement where notes land at different times in a continuously-shifting pattern rather than a fixed, repeating sequence.

Nine engines, eight scales, one generative core

Underneath the generative logic sit nine distinct synth presets spanning genuinely different synthesis techniques: subtractive, wavetable, resonator, Karplus-Strong (physical-modeling string synthesis), plus dedicated drum and noise engines. Eight scale options keep the algorithmically-generated output musically coherent rather than atonal noise, and MIDI IN lets an external source control scale and harmonic structure, giving a player a way to steer the generative engine’s boundaries without overriding its actual note-choice logic. It also works as a conventional standalone synth played directly via MIDI, for anyone who wants the nine synthesis engines without the generative/environmental layer running.

Why “always different” is the actual product

Most hardware synths — generative ones included — are valued partly for repeatability: dial in a patch, get the same sound back. Synterra’s core pitch runs the opposite direction: because its starting reference is the room’s magnetic field and its note logic runs on probability structures reacting to ongoing input, no two sessions produce the same output, even with identical settings. That’s a deliberate bet on an instrument as a continuously surprising collaborator rather than a programmable tool — closer in spirit to field-recording or aleatoric composition practice than to typical patch-based sound design, and squarely aimed at studio, stage, and outdoor/location-based generative music-making alike.
