Steam Frame Just Cleared Its Last Legal Hurdle — With a Price Deadline Now Attached

The FCC granted equipment authorization on July 29, the final federal clearance needed to sell the headset in the US — landing 31 days before a Qualcomm chip price increase that could raise costs on every unit built after September 1.

Valve’s Steam Frame VR headset received its Grant of Equipment Authorization from the FCC on July 29 — the specific federal clearance required to legally sell any radio-transmitting device in the United States, and the last regulatory box Valve needed to check before a US launch. The device appears in the FCC’s public database under identifier 2AES4-1015, with the underlying application originally submitted back on May 13.

What “cleared” actually unblocks

Without this specific certification, Valve legally could not ship a single unit to an American buyer, regardless of how finished the hardware or software was. Combined with earlier reporting that hardware has already cleared US customs — with roughly 32,000–35,000 kg of Steam Frame gear reportedly processed in June alone — the remaining blockers to an actual launch now look more like Valve’s own scheduling decisions than external dependencies. That’s a meaningfully different situation than “still waiting on regulators,” and it’s why coverage since July 29 has shifted from “will this ship” to “when.”

Valve still hasn’t announced a price, a reservation date, or a launch day. Estimates in circulation range from $899 to $1,199, but nothing is official.

The part that makes this more than a regulatory footnote

The FCC grant lands 31 days before a Qualcomm chip price increase takes effect on September 1 — an increase that could raise production costs on every Steam Frame unit built after that date, compared to units already assembled from the inventory sitting in Valve’s US warehouses. That timing turns a routine certification into something closer to a countdown: if Valve launches before September 1, it can plausibly price off pre-increase component costs; if the launch slips past that date, either the price reflects the new Qualcomm costs, or Valve absorbs the difference on units built afterward.
