Most video software is built around a timeline you edit ahead of time. VDMX is built around the opposite assumption: that you don’t know what the room, the music, or the moment will call for until you’re in it. It’s Mac-only, modular VJ software that’s been a working tool in the live-visuals scene for over two decades, and this is the shape of a first session with it.

The core idea: layers, not a timeline
A VDMX project is built from layers — each one a slot that plays a source (a video file, a live camera feed, or a generative visual patch) and can carry its own effects and blend mode. You stack and mix layers live, the same conceptual model as a DJ mixer’s channels but for image instead of sound. There’s no “render” step and no fixed duration: a set is however long you’re performing, built by triggering and blending sources in response to what’s happening in the room.
The Workspace Manager and Inspector
VDMX’s interface centers on the Workspace Manager, where you add layers, plugins, and effects, and the Inspector, where you configure whatever’s currently selected. Windows and panels are tabbed and draggable, so the interface reconfigures around whatever you’re doing — a layout for building a set looks different from a layout for performing one, and VDMX expects you to build both. The official getting-started documentation frames this explicitly as a self-paced tool: there’s a demo project full of working examples worth pulling apart before you build anything from scratch.
Media matters more than in a timeline editor
Because everything plays live rather than rendering in advance, source media has to be encoded for real-time decoding, not just visual quality. VDMX’s own documentation is blunt about this: use a codec built for scrubbing and random access, like HAP, rather than a standard delivery codec like H.264, which is optimized for linear playback and will stutter or drop frames under a VJ workload. If you’re repurposing footage that wasn’t shot for this, re-encoding it with every frame as a keyframe is the fix. Fast, dedicated storage matters too — the documentation recommends an SSD separate from your system drive with at least 150MB/s read/write, since a live set with several video layers can genuinely saturate a slow drive.
Where to go from a first session
Start with one layer and one source, and get comfortable triggering and blending before adding a second. VDMX rewards patience here more than most creative tools — the payoff isn’t a finished file, it’s a set you can actually perform without staring at the interface trying to remember which panel does what. Once triggering feels automatic, the natural next steps are MIDI or OSC mapping (so a controller replaces mouse clicks) and layering in effects plugins, both of which turn VDMX from “software you operate” into an instrument.
