Turning a Painting Into 3D Is Impossible — So This Paper Prints the Ambiguity Instead
Printing the Underdetermined, published in the Proceedings of the ACM on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, foregrounds multi-solutionness — the non-uniqueness of 3D configurations compatible with one painted image. The pipeline samples several camera-orbit video sequences from a single painting, reconstructs each with 3D Gaussian Splatting so density halos and ghosting expose unresolved degrees of freedom, and fabricates the result as a physical artifact.
