An Artist Dove From the Azores to the Aeolian Islands to Film the Origin of Life — Then Built a Cave Around the Footage
Psychosphere, an installation by artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen, pairs deep-sea footage shot across the Azores and Aeolian Islands with three sculptural series exploring abiogenesis and non-human agency. First shown at Cisternerne in Copenhagen and later adapted for the 2025 UN Ocean Conference, the work draws on writer Melanie Challenger's concept of the "psychosphere" to question how deep-sea mining interests reframe other life as resource rather than agent.
