Judder in Peripheral Vision Can Be Masked by Shifting the Phase of Noise Instead of Rendering More Frames
Foveated rendering saves computation by dropping peripheral spatial and temporal resolution, at the cost of judder. This paper shows that the synthesized noise already used to restore peripheral detail can also restore motion cues: given on-screen angular velocity and the temporal rate, it selects a noise frequency band whose phase shifts mask judder without introducing aliasing of their own.
