A Column Made of Thread Rotates When You Approach It, and the Shadows Rearrange Themselves
Schattenrequisit: Column is a cylindrical volume built from closely spaced fine threads. Millimetre-wave sensors detect visitors nearby; a stepper motor slowly rotates the thread assembly; the overlapping strands cast shadow patterns that never settle. It shows at Hibiya OKUROJI as part of DESIGNART TOKYO 2026, which runs 30 October to 8 November — and the reference point is sudare, the slatted screens Japanese buildings have used to filter light for centuries.
