Multi-material 3D printing’s waste problem has two competing solutions this year. Flashforge’s Creator 5, covered here previously, uses four separate physical toolheads that swap in and out. Bambu Lab’s new H2C, built around a system it calls Vortek, takes a different approach entirely: one toolhead position, with six interchangeable hotends the machine physically picks up and deposits as the print requires — engineered like a CNC tool changer, but for nozzles instead of cutting tools.

How Vortek actually works
The H2C carries seven total nozzle positions: six swappable hotends housed in a right-side rack, spanning 0.2mm, 0.4mm, 0.6mm, and 0.8mm diameters across induction and standard heating types, plus one fixed nozzle on the left. The induction-heated hotends can come up to temperature in as little as 8 seconds, fast enough that automatic mid-print swaps don’t stall the print waiting for a new nozzle to heat. Bambu reports up to 58% less purge waste compared to traditional single-nozzle AMS systems like the H2S, while supporting up to seven different materials in a single print run with no purging required between them.
Why dedicating a nozzle to a material matters
The practical benefit of Vortek isn’t just fewer swaps — it’s that a specific hotend can be permanently dedicated to a specific filament, particularly valuable for costly engineering materials that would otherwise contaminate a shared nozzle with residue from whatever printed before it. That’s a genuine advantage over a single shared nozzle purging between materials every switch, and a different trade-off than a true tool-changer’s fully separate toolheads: fewer independent print heads overall, but faster, more automated switching than manually swapping a toolhead assembly.
Where it sits against the competition, and what it costs
At $2,399 for the standard combo (printer plus one AMS 2 Pro, no laser), climbing to $3,599 with a 40W laser bundle, the H2C sits well above the Flashforge Creator 5’s $649–949 range — a direct reflection of Vortek’s more automated, more mechanically complex nozzle-swapping system compared to a simpler four-toolhead changer. For a studio doing serious multi-material work across genuinely different filament types, the automated per-material dedication may be worth the premium; for someone mostly switching between similar plastics, a cheaper toolhead-based system likely does the job for meaningfully less.
