Bambu Lab confirmed on August 13 that it’s building its first standalone laser engraver and cutter, the R1, due to ship in September 2026. The announcement so far is a teaser image of the machine cutting through wood and a one-line tagline — “A new Ray of making” — with no spec sheet or price yet, but it marks a real product-category shift for a company that has, until now, sold lasers only as add-on modules for its 3D printers.
From module to standalone machine
Bambu Lab’s existing laser hardware lives inside the H2D ecosystem: swappable laser modules ranging from a 10W unit at $2,149 up to a 40W module at $2,699, both designed to click into the H2D’s toolhead alongside its 3D-printing and cutting heads. That approach makes sense for someone who already owns an H2D and wants to add laser capability, but it means the laser is always secondary — sharing a gantry, a footprint, and a price point with a machine built primarily to print. The R1’s framing as a dedicated product, rather than another H2D accessory, suggests Bambu Lab sees enough standalone demand to justify a machine that does one job.
What “personal manufacturing hub” is starting to mean
Bambu Lab has been explicit that it doesn’t see itself as just a 3D-printer company anymore — the R1 is described as expanding a “personal manufacturing hub” that already spans FDM printing, laser cutting, and CNC-adjacent add-ons. For makers and small studios building objects rather than just printing them, that’s the more interesting story than the R1 itself: a single vendor’s ecosystem increasingly covering the whole fabrication stack, from a filament spool to a finished, engraved piece, without stitching together tools from separate companies. Competitors like xTool and Glowforge have owned the standalone-laser space for makers; the R1 is Bambu Lab deciding that’s territory worth a dedicated product rather than a shared toolhead.
What’s still unknown
Bambu Lab hasn’t published power options, work area, or price for the R1 — the product page is currently just an email signup for launch notifications. Given the H2D module pricing, a standalone unit competitive with established diode and CO2 laser engravers would need to land somewhere in that same $1,500–$3,000 band to make sense against xTool’s and Glowforge’s own lineups. The company has said only that more details are coming before the September release.
