Bitwig Studio 6: Polyphonic Voice Stacking in the Grid and MPE Everywhere

Bitwig's sixth major version deepens its modular Grid with per-voice polyphonic patching, extends MPE handling across every device, and adds a redesigned modulation system — sharpening the DAW's identity as the one built for sound designers who patch.

Bitwig released Studio 6 in July, and the update doubles down on the thing that distinguishes the DAW from Ableton, Logic, and FL: its modular Grid and its obsession with modulation. The headline additions are polyphonic voice stacking inside the Grid — letting a patch spawn independent voices per note rather than running monophonically — and MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) handling extended across every device in the program, so per-note pitch, pressure, and slide travel through the whole signal chain.

Polyphony in the Grid changes what you can build

The Grid, Bitwig’s node-based modular environment, has always let you build synths and effects from primitives, but its polyphony story was awkward — you’d design a voice and then wrestle with how it multiplied. Studio 6’s per-voice polyphonic patching makes each note instantiate its own copy of the patch, with per-voice modulation that stays independent. For sound designers, that’s the difference between a monosynth you retrofit and a genuinely polyphonic instrument you build from scratch, chords and all.

MPE everywhere, not just at the controller

MPE support that stops at the synth is only half useful. Studio 6 pushes per-note expression data through effects and modulators too, so a slide on a Roli or Osmose can drive a filter cutoff on one note without touching the others. Combined with the redesigned modulation system — Bitwig’s signature “drag a modulator onto any parameter” workflow, now with more sources and clearer routing visualization — it makes expressive, per-note sound design feel native rather than bolted on. It’s a release aimed squarely at the electronic and experimental musicians who already chose Bitwig for exactly this.
