Google continued building out Android XR this year — the open platform now spanning Samsung’s Galaxy XR, Xreal’s glasses, and a growing hardware roster — with a maturing developer SDK and, more consequentially, Gemini woven in as a core interaction layer rather than a bolted-on app. The bet is pointed: the reason to wear a headset or glasses shouldn’t be a slightly better screen, but an AI assistant that shares your view and context — seeing what you see, understanding the space around you, and answering, guiding, or acting in the moment. It’s a software-and-AI pitch in a field that has mostly competed on hardware.

AI as the interaction model, not a feature
