Actors, not nodes

Isadora calls its building blocks actors rather than nodes or ops — a naming choice that isn’t just cosmetic. Each actor does one job (play a movie, apply an effect, watch for a MIDI trigger, hold a number) and you connect actors together on a canvas the same way you’d patch a modular synth, wiring outputs to inputs. The performance framing matters here: actors are meant to be triggered live, by a stage manager or the performers themselves, not just calculated frame by frame in the background.

Scenes: patches you can jump between

The organizing unit above the actor is the scene — a self-contained patch representing one section, cue, or moment of a show. A real production typically strings together many scenes, with control logic deciding when to transition from one to the next, whether that’s a manual cue, a timer, or a sensor picking up a performer hitting a mark. Thinking in scenes rather than one enormous continuous patch is the biggest conceptual shift for anyone coming from a single-canvas tool — it maps directly onto how a show is actually structured into cues.
