Prusa released the MK4S in early July — an evolutionary update to their MK4 platform that integrates an automatic material system (tool changer) directly into the printer rather than as an add-on. The new system supports six different materials simultaneously, switches between them without removing the nozzle, and maintains 150-micron minimum layer height (down from 200 microns on the MK4), which puts the printer in territory that previously required machines costing $5000-$15000.

Multi-material as default, not add-on
Previous Prusa printers required an external enclosure to manage multiple materials. The MK4S embeds the changer into the carriage, meaning the printer ships ready for multi-material work. This matters for artists and makers: a single print can now use soluble supports (removed with water), flexible TPU for joints, rigid PETG for structure, and color variation — all without stopping the print or adding external hardware.
150-micron precision at this price point is new territory
Layer height directly trades off between resolution and print time. 0.15mm means you can print fine surface details — text smaller than 2mm, mechanical joints tighter than 0.5mm — without the print taking 40+ hours. Prusa achieved this with a new nozzle design and tighter tolerances on the heated bed and stepper motors.
