Signal Festival is in Prague, it is in its fourteenth edition, its theme this year is Dream On!, and it closes tonight — 18 October, the last of four nights that began on the 15th.
The structure, which is the part worth copying
Festivals of this kind usually pick one model and live with its costs. Signal runs two in parallel.
- Hours: 19:00 to 24:00 every night. Not “after dark” — a published five-hour window, the same every day.
- Two zones: the city centre and Dejvice, geographically separate, with the official opening ceremony held in Dejvice rather than on the tourist route.
- Two tiers: a free outdoor trail, plus eight extra installations behind a ticket as Signal INSIDE, which ticket holders can enter from 18:00 — an hour before the free programme starts.
- An off-programme and a Student Visions strand alongside the main selection.
- Afterparties, presented by a sponsor, with SOHN, TWO LANES, Róisín Murphy and Röyksopp.
The five-hour fixed window plus a paid early-entry hour is a neat solution to the problem every light festival has, which is that the good works develop a two-hour queue by 21:00. You are not buying better art; you are buying it without a crowd, and the free route stays free.
The scale behind it: the festival’s own teaser states that in 2025 alone it recorded more than half a million visits.
The works
From designboom’s on-site photo captions, this edition includes X Kinetic Techno Sculpture by Gábor Kitzinger, András László Nagy and Rozi Mákó; Multimmersion Upside Down by Aka Chang; Living in Truth I by Svitlana Reinish; Brána imaginace by Milan Cais; Za co neseš zodpovědnost ty by Karolína Schulzová; Residual Signal by MUCHA Studio; Dreaming Infinite by Timo Lejeune; MIMIC.2 by Media.tribe; and Signes by Playmodes.
Two placements stand out. Signes is in Signal Space, the festival’s permanent venue under the Old Town Market Hall, which is open year-round rather than only during the four nights — an answer to the usual criticism that city light festivals vanish along with their scaffolding. And Laterna Magika staged a live, site-specific performance at the Old Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bubeneč, built on a poem by František Vinant: a nineteenth-century industrial building that is a museum for the other 361 days of the year.
The festival’s archive is worth a scroll for anyone programming this kind of event. Past editions carry Refik Anadol’s Prague Dreams, built from urban data; Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s Thermal Drift; Shohei Fujimoto’s intangible #form; Iregular’s As Water Falls; and, in a nice piece of civic memory, Zdeněk Sýkora’s treatment of the ventilation chimneys of the Letná tunnel.
Who runs it
Producer Martin Pošta, producer and curator Jan Rolník, and artist Amar Mulabegovič of the art group The Macula. The legal entity is Signal Production s.r.o., registered in Prague 2.
designboom puts the origin at a 2010 projection-mapping project on the Prague Astronomical Clock, with the festival proper founded in 2013 — which squares with this being the fourteenth edition in 2026.
If you are reading this on Sunday
Tonight is the last night: 19:00 to 24:00, both zones. The festival has published day-by-day tips including one for today. Signal Space stays open after the festival ends, which is where to go if you miss it.
