visionOS 27 entered developer beta June 8, with a public beta following this month, and the update turns out to carry considerably more than the keynote’s framing around the Vision Pro’s new M5 chip suggested. The most immediately noticeable change isn’t a performance number — it’s what happens to Siri.

Siri stops being a flat interface
Siri is no longer a simple 2D overlay. In visionOS 27, it appears as a luminous 3D sphere that floats freely in your physical space, and if you look directly at it, no activation phrase is required at all — eye contact alone is enough to start talking to it. That’s a meaningfully different interaction model than “say the wake word,” and it’s the kind of change that only makes sense in a headset that already knows exactly where your eyes are pointed at every moment, which is precisely the sensing Vision Pro has had since launch and hasn’t fully exploited for system-level interaction until now.
What else actually shipped
Apps gain curved screen options rather than being restricted to flat rectangular windows, and existing panoramic photos can be transformed into immersive 3D scenes automatically. New “extra-small” widgets include a Mac Virtual Display widget that can be dropped anywhere in a space for one-tap access to a connected Mac. On the performance side, the headset now starts up and connects to Wi-Fi up to three times faster than before — a small-sounding number that matters disproportionately for a device people are often reluctant to put on if booting it feels like a chore. Vision Pro also gained an accessibility feature letting users control a compatible wheelchair using eye tracking, extending work Apple previewed earlier this year.
Why the eye-contact Siri model is the one to watch
A wake-word system assumes you’re talking to a device. A gaze-activated system assumes the interface is watching you the same way a person in the room would — waiting for you to look at it, the way you’d get someone’s attention before speaking. That’s a subtly different relationship between user and assistant than voice-first systems have offered, and it’s a design direction other headset makers chasing “ambient computing” interfaces — Android XR and Steam Frame both included — will have real reason to watch closely once visionOS 27’s full public release lands this fall.
