Every standard keyboard layout inherits its shape from a 19th-century mechanical typewriter, not from how a human hand actually moves. Designer Paul’s Cogito keyboard starts from the opposite direction, asking a simple question directly in the project’s own framing: “What if a keyboard was actually designed for human hands?”
Built from hand measurements, not habit
Cogito discards the standard QWERTY grid entirely in favor of a columnar layout derived from actual finger-length and reach measurements — each column staggered and angled to match how a specific finger naturally extends and curls, rather than forcing every finger to reach for keys arranged in uniform rows. The pinky cluster is rotated 15 degrees to match that finger’s natural divergence from the rest of the hand, and each thumb operates a three-key arc — including the spacebar — positioned for an inward sweeping motion instead of a single straight-down press. The whole layout runs on just 36 keys total, relying on layer-switching to reach the full range of standard keyboard input without physically needing more keys.
Three years, roughly 50 prototypes
The design process ran from 2023 through 2026, moving through around 50 3D-printed prototype iterations. Early versions experimented with Magic Keyboard switches before Paul settled on a partnership using Framework’s One Key Modules — the same super-thin switch modules Framework sells for its modular laptop keyboards — paired with custom PCBs manufactured by PCBWay on wafer-thin, 0.8mm boards. The project ships in two variants: a baseline Cogito and a Cogito+ with 3 degrees of integrated tenting plus Joy-Con-style tenting compatibility, letting the two halves angle inward for a more neutral wrist position.
Part of a longer argument against the typewriter’s ghost
Paul frames Cogito as a direct challenge to a piece of design history most keyboard users never question: the QWERTY layout exists because of specific 1870s typewriter mechanics, not because it’s the best arrangement for a human hand, and most “ergonomic” keyboards on the market today still graft split halves and slight curves onto that same underlying letter arrangement rather than reconsidering it from scratch. Cogito’s bet is that starting over from anatomy first, typewriter history second, produces something that’s not just more comfortable but — in Paul’s own words — more efficient and more portable too, thanks to the low-profile switches keeping the whole build thin enough to travel with.
